Daism Report #5

In a Time of Divine Frustration

by  Elias

This report is a brief summary of recent news and information supplied by sources inside and outside of Adidam. Needless to say, these reports reflect only a small portion of what is going on around Adi Da, and in the community at large.

The greatest weight is given here to actual notes communicated from Adi Da's managers to the entire community. Other information reflects the perceptions and experience of specific individuals, who have been willing to share their unique perspective. A portion of the facts and opinions presented here were supplied by a former follower of Frederick Lenz who was briefly involved with Adidam.

As before, brief quotations from Adidam literature and media are offered here to provide an objective basis for scholarly discussion. No violation of copyright is intended, and these passages are quoted under Section 107 (Fair Use Provisions) of United States Copyright Law.

RESULTS OF MEDICAL TESTS ARE IN

The paralyzing anxiety attack that Adi Da suffered on Lopez Island, north of Seattle, on April 12, is now being called, by him, a "summary Event" and a "great Gift" to devotees. Like the famous "divine emergence" of 1986, once again he almost dropped his body. But for the sake of devotees and his Love of all humanity, he made the difficult choice of hanging around for a few more years.

The physical roots of Adi Da's breakdown were thoroughly explored and diagnosed in a series of medical tests in Los Angeles during the following weeks. The conclusions, while not immediately life-threatening, were not good -- Frank is suffering from arteriosclerosis of the major arteries of the heart. Arteriosclerosis is the advanced stage of a disease called atherosclerosis---

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which fatty deposits containing mainly cholesterol but also smaller amounts of phospholipids and neutral fat appear in the walls of the arteries. Gradually fibrous tissue grows around or onto the fatty deposits, and calcium from the body fluids frequently combines with the fat to form solid calcium compounds, eventually evolving into hard plates similar to bone. Thus, in the early stages of atherosclerosis, only fatty deposits occur in the walls of the vessels, but in the late stage the vessels may become extremely fibrotic and constricted, or even bony hard in consistency, a condition called arteriosclerosis, or "hardening of the arteries.
Guyton, Function of the Human Body, p122
Plaque and calcium have built up around Frank's heart, to the point of hardening the pulmonary arteries, causing the heart to work harder, driving up his blood pressure, and reducing circulation. Fortunately the disease hasn't reached the point where the Avatar needs a triple bypass, and he is undergoing treatment "to reverse this arteriosclerosis by means which have been proven to reverse this condition", whatever that means.

Interestingly, the Adidam physicians attribute Frank's heart condition entirely to "genetics" and high blood pressure, both which run in his family. No mention is made of the possibility that wrong diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, smoking, alcohol, and/or emotional states (specifically anger) might be contributing factors, as they are with ordinary human beings.

[Frank is, after all, God, and God can't be viewed to have been the direct cause of his own mortality! But one must ask, if God wanted to live to a ripe old age (reportedly Frank once told devotees he would live to 150), wouldn't he have chosen genetically pure ancestors, and/or tweaked his own genes in such a way as to increase his longevity? Better yet, wouldn't he have lived by the diet he recommended to others, abstaining from high cholesterol foods, meat, alcohol, butter, ice cream, and Godiva chocolates? And wouldn't he have worked out in the gym every day to kept his weight and blood pressure under control? --ed.]

Frank was also found to have an accumulation of mercury in his body, as well as "some mineral deficiencies, adrenal exhaustion, and low levels of some important amino acids that have a key role in the right functioning of the nervous system."

Welcome to nature's cause-and-effect, and the inexorable passage of time, Sri Ruchira Avatar Avadhoot Adi Da Love-Ananda Samraj, the Universally Expected God-Man! ;-)

AS RAMA-LENZITES DROP OUT, SCHISM RENDS ADIDAM

Frank's anxieties have not been reduced lately, as he as learned that many of his new student novices, former followers of suicidal-guru Frederick Lenz, have stopped practicing and disappeared. The more courageous Ramas have bravely made it known they are leaving Adidam, disillusioned by their new Master.

The situation in the New York Community (where most of the former Ramas are based) has grown very tense, to the point where people are exploding at each other with angry accusations.

Frank has not helped the situation, choosing this moment to heap extra abuse on the New York Community.

The recent history of the New York branch of Adidam has been one of conflict and schism -- a schism directly caused by Frank, when he decided to exempt the Ramas from the usual disciplines, transitions, and cultural programming -- and draw them quickly into his inner circle. Many Daists who had practiced arduously for years, and jumped through the Master's every hoop, felt betrayed. Of course they are being told that this wound is a sign of their own egoism and their failure to practice. Of course.

As for the Ramas themselves, some are wondering whether promotion and access were made far too easy -- so easy that parting is no problem at all. From the beginning the Rama-Lenzites sensed that their healthy incomes were the real reason for Frank's fawning over them. Once they got to know him, and realized what they had signed on for, they felt no compunction about breaking their "eternal vows". Indeed, many of them have simply switched teachers, to Maharishi Brzee, a guru who has publicly called Frank "a human vegetable".

Sri Brzee, who is Wayne ["Your Erroneous Zones"] Dyer's guru, is a good-hearted spiritual teacher, who feeds the poor (see his website) and gives public seminars on mantras for achieving prosperity. Born in India, he received a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, where he taught for ten years. He claims to be the reincarnation of four great Indian saints:

My Nadi readings have identified me as a reincarnation of four great saints from ancient India: Agastiya, the foremost Siddha and author of the Tamil language, as well as countless texts on astrology, alchemy, mantras, sastras, and medicine; Bhismacharya, the oldest and most revered guru during the period of the Mahabharata; Manikavacakar, an illustrious Tamil Saint who wrote several masterpieces of devotional lyrics on Lord Siva; and Swami Ramalingam (Vallalar) -- he was graced with the greatest evolution of any being on the earthplane and ascended with his body of light in 1874.

Finally, one more note about the Ramas: sources tell us that the female followers of Frederick Lenz tended to share a commonality -- many of them were sexual abuse victims before they got involved with Frederick Lenz and Adi Da.

DFJ'S MIRACLES TO BE ADVERTISED TO PUBLIC

AVATAR ADI DA SAMRAJ: I am not a smiling philosopher. People have failed to tell the story, and that causes people to relate to Me wrongly. My Word and Leela are not just accommodating a philosophy, the philosophy of the time. The communication about Me should knock people's socks off. And they should be great stories, telling the full story of the supernormal Powers, like they do with Yogananda or Swami Muktananda. Tell the FULL story of it.
[July 4, 2000]
Frank seems to be feeling nostalgic for the "Garbage and the Goddess" days, when a great deal of excitement was generated around him, and the power of his siddhis was rockin' and rollin', and "knocking people's socks off."

He has recently ordered that the missionary communications once again begin to stress his miracles and supernormal powers -- no doubt to attract a wider audience.

Adidam marketeer Carolyn Lee has been ordered to rewrite The Promised God Man Is Here, including as many miraculous leelas as she can dig up.

In her notes to the community she said that Frank is looking for stories of miraculous healings, and leelas that demonstrate that he can read minds or "know exactly what a person is up to".

Think back to Garbage and the Goddess -- there is reference to "miracles" on the cover. And everyone loved that book and still does, because it is full of wild happenings that are clearly miraculous. Beloved's Miracles are on a Cosmic scale, which makes them hard to talk about -- we see so little of what He is really Doing. But this should not make us silent about what we do see and experience. The trick is to find the Leelas that will really jolt the sceptical mind. Weather Leelas, or other general coincidences may not work in a book, at least until there are some more "hard core" ones established first that create the expectation for more supernormal manifestations.

Most of the current leelas being circulated are of the romantic-devotional kind, describing changes of emotional state in the devotee. An example to include in the book might be the following:

Nausea During Internet-Darshan

DEVOTEE: I technically managed the first Internet Darshan that we had in Los Angeles. That was my first time of being the technician. And the occasion was a particularly intense one, occurring right in the middle of the most difficult period of the political crisis in Fiji. I felt that Fiji, and everything to do with it, was right there -- even the whole world.

During the occasion I became nauseous. I had to run from the room and I continued to feel ill all night. I did not immediately realize what was going on, but now it is clear to me that I was experiencing purification from the immense Force of Siddhi that was coming through the computer screen. Beloved was purifying the world, and I was in the front line of the purification. Since then, I have been fine. I am more balanced and better able to breathe and to conduct Beloved's Divine Siddhi. But that occasion was a lesson to me about what Beloved is really Doing. I realized there is no way that I could process the slightest part of what Beloved is dealing with. Not in a million years. I saw without a doubt that Beloved is doing what only the Divine Avatar can Do. No mere human being could possibly do it, or endure it.

And this leela, describing a recent occasion at The Mountain of Attention:

When devotees began to arrive, Beloved sent out a message that everyone should loosen up and begin to dance. Rock music resounded throughout The Manner while devotees danced in front of Beloved´s chair in the Darshan Hall. Beloved came out of His quarters at around 9:30 or 10:00 p.m. and took His seat in His Darshan chair. He was essentially quiet for the entire evening, spending about an hour and a half just gazing around the room at each devotee as they danced down the light before Him. At about 11:30, He went back into His quarters. He reappeared slightly after midnight and stayed until almost 2:00 a.m., again offering His Darshan and Regard to His devotees as they danced and swayed before Him to the music of Live, Jaya, Michael Jackson, rap, and more. Some sat on the floor in front of Him, hands up beholding Him, but most danced before Him, with their hands in the gesture of beholding while integrating His Divine Siddhi into their bodies through ecstatic dance. When Beloved returned to His room, everyone present expressed their utmost praise and gratitude for His Most Perfect Grace.

Or how about this one:

Siva the Woman-Beater

While he was on his island kingdom of Naitauba, in the mid-1990's, Frank used to periodically go into wild "Siva-dances", possessed by the spirit and power of the Hindu deity of creation and destruction.

During these wild dances, the women devotees would all be drawn to him, dancing around him in sexual surrender and ecstasy, like the legendary devadasis of the Saivite cults of India. As they would come near him, he would push some of them, or swing his arms at them, knocking them over. A witness who was present told us that on one occasion he hit a woman so hard she was lifted into the air and thrown against a wall, suffering a serious whiplash injury from which she has yet to recover.

The woman told the witness that she saw the Master's violence as purification -- her ego needed purifying and this is how the Master worked with her. She felt the correct response was to keep coming back for more, no matter how many times he threw her or hit her.

Sounds like a good story for The Promised God Man Is Here!

THE KANYA CONSIDERATION

Sources indicate that Frank has recently re-opened "the Kanya consideration" -- a process by which he chooses women, from the community at large, to move into his household and serve him intimately. The women so-chosen are told they may, on occasion, be asked to become Frank's sexual partners. Unless they agree in advance to to these conditions, they don't get the job.

As I indicated in a previous report, Quandra Nirvanasati (Elizabeth Brown) has been demoted to Wife #2 -- and in fact, sources told us that she has been moved out of Frank's house and not allowed access to her husband. This has disturbed some devotees, who found her the most compassionate and intelligent of the two Quandras.

Having just one wife -- Quandra Sukha Mai (Bonnie Beavan) -- may be proving difficult for Frank. For instance, it might be too much like living with an equal of the opposite gender. It is perhaps for that reason that Frank has decided to interview new candidates.

Sources described how the process of the "Kanya Consideration" (now called "The Consideration for Serving Ladies") has worked in recent years:

Initially Frank sends out notes detailing specifications for what he requires of the candidates. The details include such things as age, physical appearance, whether they are married or have children...much like a "personals" ad in a newspaper. The women must be good-looking, and free to put all their attention on him. Women ages 20 to 50 may apply -- but generally those chosen are in their twenties or early thirties.

Those women who think they fill the bill file formal applications. Subsequently each is brought before a committee of women devotees, where they are rigorously questioned for about two hours. These committees vary in size from region to region -- anywhere from 10 to 30 women may interrogate candidates in one session.

Depending on their answers, the applicants may be invited to go to the next step -- posing for photographs in sexy lingerie. An extensive photo album is put together for each woman, showing her in numerous poses and outfits. Insiders have mockingly described the costumes the "serving ladies" are expected to wear on the job as "slut outfits...that's the way Frank likes his babes to look."

These albums are then sent to the guru, who examines them with great dedication, in the same way the he examines auction catalogs of paperweights and Disney art.

If you are chosen (many are called...few are chosen), you are whisked away to a new life, in Frank's personal harem.

Those who are rejected -- or those who serve for awhile and are cast off -- always see this as reflecting their own imperfection and failure to do sadhana.

It should be noted that the role of "Serving Ladies" is a core aspect of Frank's "Pleasure Dome" consideration, which began in later 1994. [See The Free Daist (fourth quarter 1994)]. At that time Frank gave himself the name "samraj", an ancient term meaning "emperor" or "king". He took the role of a sultan in the midst of his community, and demanded that his "circumstance" from thence forward be one of increased pampering and entertainment. Devotees, like citizens of an archaic Mogul court, were expected to bring a constant stream of gifts. Musicians were to be on hand at all times, ready to play. Dancers were to be available to entertain the king while he ate his dinner.

One informant noted that since the institution of the "Pleasure Dome", Frank has rarely expressed happiness unless the stream of gifts and entertainments is going full tilt. When people have to go back to their lives, and earn money to support him, he gets depressed, or goes into an angry funk.

One woman who served in Frank's intimate company described the experience this way:

There are two sides to what I felt in Adi Da's company: a highly-charged energy that he transmits to everybody around him...and a very weighty, heavy kind of energy that feels like his enormous neediness. It took my breath away, literally, when I first felt it. I felt like this heavy, hot air had entered my lungs and was taking my breath.

FRANK'S MOUNTING FRUSTRATION

Frank is currently feeling and expressing great frustration over the reception of his work and the failure of devotees.

This in itself, in nothing new. As one devotee put it, "I, like most of you, get a sinking feeling in my gut and heart when I hear Beloved again expressing His Frustration."

What's unusual is the sheer amount of dissatisfaction that is spewing from his mind these days. He will turn sixty-one this November, and he cannot for the life of him understand why his Teaching "has been scarcely acknowledged" by the world.

AVATAR ADI DA SAMRAJ: I feel isolated. I have nothing of a life that has profundity. My devotees are supposed to be cultivating the relationship and conveying gifts to Me. Another year has passed, and still we have not accomplished anything. There is no recognition, no process, nothing happening, nothing fundamentally has changed. In between My Sittings in the Chair, there is nothing to convey or to do with Me that makes it right. [July 5, 2000]
Sales of the first seven of the 23 Source-Texts are abysmally low, even by Adidam standards.

AVATAR ADI DA SAMRAJ: There is no response to My Literature. Why should I even print it? Nothing comes of it. This gathering is not communicating any great message. There is no culture of recognition. I Sit and Work Spiritually, and you all do nothing in response. [July 5, 2000]
Recently there had been the expectation that he would travel to New York, to grant darshan to the New York community. Instead, he has been pouring forth a vast torrent of criticism levied at the NY devotees:

The New York mission, which was supposed to have been working all of this time for Me to come there, hasn't even been doing its mission. And how, with all of these profound 23 texts and all the Work that I have been Doing, My Open Access, etc., could the mission just stop? It's beyond Me.

...The devotional organization is non-existent. And to be reviving the mission at this point --with all that I have been Doing -- is unbelievable. Even to the point of near death, and still this gathering functions in this way in relationship to Me.

...I am treated as if I have to function for the morale of the gathering and make Myself available in these dumb circumstances. That is supposed to be Adidam. This is not a culture of recognition response.

...I never receive gifts, no real description of process, no real relating to Me and finding out what I want. Everything is always collapsing and there are no gifts. And I end up waiting while people are saying they are doing the things they have to do in order to get the gifts.

...I am not anywhere. I just sit and pretend. There is no real process around Me. What am I here for? Not to mention, why would I go to New York? It's the same dead pattern. There are no gifts. No one is creating the new pattern. I am still treated like an asshole.

...You are just enclosing Me in this theater of you all. There is nothing going on with the mission or My Literature. There is no event in the gathering. You are not creating anything.

...Truly, I am just serving a secondary, religion business function. I am a Face in the Chair to keep the religion business going such that it is. My Great Divine Work or Process is bullshit to everyone.

...It is just bad news, this back East matter -- saying that they don't even have a mission. What the hell would that be for? ...There is no reason to go back East because there is no process and nothing happening. I cease to have the impulses to hang around even here. I want to get the hell out of here. I have no inclination to go to the Hall. You don't give Me any reason.

Adi Da further expressed that he wants the New York Community to create "extremely high level events where He is completely acknowledged and honored and given the proper space, and many, many people coming to see Him." He wants to be recognized like Vivekananda was. He wants to be honored like Yogananda was. He wants to be a real spiritual celebrity, a major star in the New Age cultural firmament.

Why have people been so unresponsive to Me? Why is there such destruction of My Work? After 30 years there still aren't any missionary results. So what is the source of this non-event? What is defeating it? Why are there no signs of this resistance changing?
