Shawnee Free Jones

Shawnee's Online Diary

A few years ago (1996-97) Shawnee published a career diary on the internet, which is excerpted below:

Los Angeles has been a big adjustment for me. I'm from Naitauba, a small Fijian island. Really. It was only a couple of years ago that I came to the States and learned how to use a telephone, what doorbells are and all about the wonderful world of supermarkets. My father is a spiritual leader, with followers all over the world, and he moved to Fiji when I was a kid to create a place for people to go on retreat. Growing up there with him was incredibly wonderful.

I left Fiji for the first time when I was 17 to visit relatives in San Francisco. One day, when I was shopping, a modeling-agency scout walked up out of the blue and asked if I'd take some test pictures. Two weeks later, they were sending me to auditions in New York. It all happened so fast, and I had so little experience in this world. New York got to be too scary for me, and I left.

But I liked modeling, so I signed with an agency in San Francisco and modeled for Levi Strauss & Co., Van Buren, Helene Curtis and Mervyn's. I also did an acting demo (agencies always tape their models, just in case they can act) and Mali Finn, a casting director at Warner Bros., saw the tape and wanted to meet me.

So I went to see her in L.A. -- on the Warner Bros. lot! She was the sweetest, most reassuring person, and she told me there are three things to remember about acting: Be sexy, act well and be sexy. She said if I moved to L.A., she'd put me in movies. And the amazing thing is, she actually has! I moved in January and found a place in West Hollywood. Through Mali, I got a part in L.A. Confidential, which comes out next spring. I didn't realize it when I auditioned, but Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito are in the film. Danny walked up to me, puffing his cigar, and introduced himself with a warm, gentle smile. For the first time in L.A., I felt completely relaxed.

I'm modeling now with Elite (I'm so glad I don't have to be a waitress), and I did a Japanese commercial with Charlie Sheen and music videos for John Vee and Kool & the Gang--I saw myself on Oprah the other day in a clip from the video! I've taken acting classes and am getting private coaching now, too. I also practice a lot with my camcorder, so I can actually see if what I am doing is working onscreen. I don't have a theatrical agent yet, but I'm going to start looking. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Life in L.A. can be so ironic. First, the good news: I got asked for my autograph for the first time this week! The guys who work at my post office saw a postcard in the mail from Wolford (a clothing company) and recognized me in the ad.

When I came to pick up my mail, they had placed bets on whether it was actually me in the picture. I was sooo embarrassed, I couldn't stop giggling!

Now, the bad news: my modeling agency decided to let me go. I guess I should have seen it coming, since Next is doing an overhaul and just about all the other models at the agency have already been fired. Still, it was a shock--I've been doing so well.

Tony at Next told me he had always believed in me, and he urged me to get out of the L.A. modeling scene--there's really not much work, he said. He suggested I go to Europe and really "go for it."

I have stubbornly hoped that I can and will be discovered in the United States, but maybe I'm just wrong. Then again, my acting career is going so well, and word seems to be getting around. I got a call from one of the best management companies in L.A., who had heard about me and is interested in representing me.

But today I'm auditioning for the lead in My Blue Period, the script Ronnie Yeskel sent to my managers for me to read. I'm so nervous! The director and writer, Kat Smith, is going to be there on my first read. I always try so hard not to get nervous, because I know how counterproductive it is. Somehow it always happens anyway.

Favorite food: strawberries and whipped cream.
Movie: The Witches of Eastwick.
Inspirational actor: Jessica Lange.
