"Franklin Jones First in American Legion Patriotic Talk Contest"

~ from The Sewanhaka Chieftain, November 1956 ~

Speaking on the topic "Patterns of Prejudice," Franklin Jones, Sewanhaka senior, won first place in the 20th Annual Oratorical Contest sponsored by the American Legion, which was held in the Sewanhaka auditorium on November 2 during a period 4 special assembly.

The other speakers competing for honors were Angela Grieco, Robert Morello and William Schlener.

The winning speech was based on Frank's opinion that youth is disgusted by the adult world, which, instead of guiding them, are instilling in their children their prejudices against colors, races, and creeds. He concluded with the fact that "prejudice is the root of all evil" and becomes more evident every day. Only with world understanding will come world peace.

Placing second was William Schlener, who spoke on "The Birth and Growth of the Constitution." He stated that the Constitution protects our rights, gives us all a right to take part in our government and makes all of us free.

"The Birthday of the United States" was the title of the speech by Angela Grieco. She stated that October 19, 1781, was the most important date in the history of the United States as this was when Cornwallis was defeated at Yorktown and the English reign over the American colony was over.

"Segregation" was the explosive topic given by Bob Morello. He said that segregation of the colored people in this country is bad propaganda for the United States. Through it the Communists can find many ways to sway people behind the Iron Curtain and they will soon begin to think that maybe their comrades were right about the capitalistic and prejudistic West. What's to be done about the situation is up to us, the future voters and to our parents to pick cadidates who will do something about the problem.
