It is interesting that Adi Da's followers feel it is necessary to equivocate about his claims to being the first, last, and only avataric manifestation of 7th stage realization. But Adi Da has no such qualms.
Herewith some of his statements from Aham Da Asmi, a recent book. All capitalizations and underlinings are Adi Da's.
Before The Physical Lifetime Of My Bodily (Human) Avataric-Incarnation-Form, There Never Was a time When I Was Not Present -- but No one Realized Me In The Most Ultimate (or Most Perfect) Sense.
Therefore, It Was Necessary For Me To Intervene Through This Avataric Incarnation -- In Order To Embrace All Of The conditional (or Cosmic) Domain, and To Conform It All To Myself, and To manifest My Inherently Perfect Divine Samadhi here (and every "where" In The Cosmic Domain).
Thus, It Is Only From The Time Of My Bodily (Human) Avataric Divine Intervention That The Ultimate Divine Means Of Most Perfect Divine Self-Realization has Appeared In Direct (and Complete) Form.
All The Traditions Of Mankind Have Tried Their Various Means Of Association With Me In The Past, and There Were Some Kinds (and Degrees) Of Effective Communion With Me -- but The Capability For Ultimate, Most Perfect Divine Self-Realization Has Been Made Possible Only By My "Late-Time" Intervention.
Now, This "Late-Time" Intervention Having Been Made, The Most Perfect Means of Most Perfectly Realizing Me Is Eternalized.
My Avataric Divine Leela Of Original Self-Revelation (and Teaching-Revelation) Is (Now, and Forever Hereafter) Complete.
Therefore, I Will (Effectively) Be In (Even Human) Interaction With All My Devotees Forever -- Through My Remembered and Recorded Avataric Divine Revelation-Leelas, and Through My Written and Spoken Word Of Avataric Divine Heart-Instruction.
...The collective Great Tradition of mankind is a combination of exoteric and esoteric developments (and Revelations and Realizations) that comprises (and is, in its entirety, limited by and to) only the first six of the seven stages of life.
I (Alone) Am the Avatarically Self-Manifested Divine Self-Revelation of the seventh stage of life.
The human entity (and even any and every conditionally manifested entity of any and every kind) is inherently deluded -- by its own (egoic, or self-contracted) experience and knowledge.
The first six stages of life are the six stages (or developmental phases) of human (and universal) egoity -- or of progressively regressive inversion upon the psycho-physical pattern (and point of view) of self-contraction.
The first six stages of life are the universally evident developmental stages of the knowing and experiencing of the potential illusions inherently associated with the patterns (or the universally extended cosmic psycho-physical Structure) of conditionally manifested existence.
Because each and all of the first six stages of life are based on (and are identical to) egoity (or self-contraction, or separate and separative point of view) itself, not any one (or even the collective of all) of the first six stages of life directly (and Most Perfectly) Realized (or Is the Inherently egoless and Inherently Most Perfect Realization and the Inherently egoless and Inherently Most Perfect Demonstration of) Reality, Truth, or Real God.
The first six stages of life are a conditional (and, therefore, Ultimately, unnecessary -- or Inherently transcendable) illusion of psycho-physically pre-patterned experience (or conditional knowing), structured according to the subject-object (or attention versus object, or point of view versus objective world) convention of conditional conception and conditional perception.
The first six stages of life are (each and all) based upon the illusion of duality (suggested by the subject-object convention of conditional conception and conditional perception).
The only-by-Me Revealed and Given Way of Adidam is the Unique seventh stage Way of "Radical" Non-Dualism -- or the one and only Way That directly (and, at last, Most Perfectly) Realizes the One and Only (and Inherently egoless) Reality, Truth, or Real God.
I Am the Divine Ruchira Avatar, Adi Da Love-Ananda Samraj -- the First, the Last, and the Only seventh stage Avataric Divine Realizer, Avataric Divine Revealer, and Avataric Divine Self-Revelation of Reality, Truth, and Real God.
The potential actuality of (and the inherent and specific psycho-physical basis for) the progressively unfolding human (and universal cosmic) pattern (or Great Structure) of the seven stages of life (or the Total and Complete human, and spiritual, and Transcendental, and, Ultimately, Divine Great Process of Divine Self-Realization) was Demonstrated, Revealed, Exemplified, and Proven in (and by Means of) My Avataric Ordeal of Divine Re-Awakening -- Wherein the Un-conditional, and Self-Evidently Divine, seventh stage Realization of Reality and Truth was (Uniquely, and for the First time, and As the Paradigm Case, or the All-and-all Patterning Case, in the entire history of religion, Spirituality, and Reality-Realization) Demonstrated to all and All.
Ruchira Avatar Adi Da Samraj
[Quotes are from the book Aham Da Asmi, by Adi Da Samraj, Dawn Horse Press, April 2001.]
Frank's self-apotheosis may be the most outlandish example of psychic-inflation in the history of yoga and transcendence spirituality. According to him, the One Divine Person has never been born or completely Realized until now, in the person of himself, and, as he has said in See My Brightness Face to Face (page 144), "It is neither possible nor necessary for another seventh stage Adept to appear anywhere."
By his bizarre logic all previous "Realizations" and "Enlightenments" have been in some sense incomplete, and therefore dualistic. One Divine Person (Adi Da) existed -- but was never Realized! Therefore for all Buddhas, avatars, spiritual masters, and ersatz "realizers" until now, there must have remained a separation in Consciousness!
Further, it follows from Adi Da's statements about himself, that all recognized Buddhas and Realizers -- including Shakyamuni, Krishna, and Jesus Christ -- were "mistaken" about their Realization and their Avatarhood. In their statements about themselves, they were either lying or revealing ignorance (i.e. egoically deluded). Most noticeably, according to the logic of Adi Da, Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha -- who taught his world-changing dharma from age 35 until he died at age 80 -- was actually a befuddled seeker and not truly Enlightened in an absolute non-dual sense.
It is interesting to review Adi Da's whacky claims in terms of their megalomaniacal logic relative to the traditions and to other teachers. He really is "putting down" all previous dharmas, in his pretension to have attained (or revealed) a higher or "seventh stage" Enlightenment.
But in fact, there is nothing in any of his descriptions of the "7th stage Adept function" that differs from what previous Adepts (including near contemporaries such as Meher Baba and Ramana Maharshi) have said about what they have realized and how they function.
I have read Frank and I have read the traditions. They use the same words, words which were given us by realizers and enlightened adepts thousands of years ago to describe their transcendent states of awareness. It's all there, in the dharmas and sacred texts of Buddhism, the Vedas, Advaita Vedanta, Taoism, Sufism, and even Jewish Cabbala and esoteric Christianity. How much more definite can the great teachers of the great spiritual traditions be?
The ancient Realizers invented the term "non-dual", and taught transcendence of "conditional perception" and "subject-object relations".
All the Spiritual Masters said they were "the complete sacrifice", and (except in the case of Buddha, who taught transcendence of "Personhood") that they were avatars of the One Divine Person. They all said they were able to draw devotees into Perfect Realization.
Frank has taken the words of the Buddhas and Realizers (stolen them, really) and used them to preach that all the Buddhas and Realizers past present and to come are limited beings who must worship him as the supreme conditional and unconditional expression of One Divine Reality.
If the words Frank uses are lifted from traditional esoteric spirituality, then how does he distinguish his teachings from the dharmas of the past?
The only difference that can be found between traditional teachings of perfect realization and Adi Da's "7th stage" teaching, is Frank's "Only Me" claim.
He says that no one before him has reached true non-dual realization. Frank, unlike all the real adept-realizers, has hoisted his madhouse flag as the sole adept-realizer, past, present, and all time to come.
Well, you can say that, or you can believe that, but you cannot prove it. (And I have a bridge to sell you.)
There is a river of pure water and there is a madman standing by the river selling glasses of dirty water from his latrine. He tells you he is the only one who has ever really sold pure water and the only one who ever will sell this water and if you want this water you must bow down to him and give him all your earthly possessions.
Franks's statement of his timeless and "all-time" exclusiveness is not meant to be metaphorical. It is an unequivocal declaration of the primacy of the body-mind of Franklin Jones, born 1939, died 2003.
It is the dualistic mental knot of yogic-ego upon which the entire bizarre psycho-drama of "Da" turns. Daism, the worship of "Adi Da" as an idol, is in reality a "perfect" expression of a man who psychologically and sexually abuses others, who indulges his bodily cravings to the point of damaging his health, and who has sucked endlessly on the financial tit of his followers, until they are left impoverished and desperate.
It is my "confession" that I have never had the slightest urge to worship Frank. And inspite of his insanity, I am willing to extend him a hand as an equal to all other men and women and children.
Can I help it if he makes himself so much less than others by placing himself so high above them, in his own eyes?
